I feel like I’m the last person to hear about this, but just to make sure everyone knows, there is a command line client for Pandora. And that is awesome.

It’s called Pianobar.

For those who love their service but hate the UI, myself included, this is the perfect thing.

<rant>BTW, I applaude the authors for NOT taking the opportunity to bite the hand that feeds them by providing a way to save the songs.

Pandora has made it this far despite tremendous opposition from big media and it was a classy move to respect their licensing concerns while providing a much needed alternative to their butterfaced website.

If you like their service, consider becoming a Pandora One Member (it’s only $36/yr) and help keep them around. Don’t shit where you eat by abusing their already generous service.

If you want to steal your music, more power to you. But, find a way to do it that doesn’t hurt a grassroots company.</rant>

I haven’t exactly been following the iTerm project lately. Tried it, wanted to like it, but it just wasn’t right in all the wrong places.

But apparently some folks have been getting frisky because their repo picked ramped up in July and they’ve been getting commits in almost daily ever since. Many thanks to the folks who have clearly been working hard on this.

It’s actually quite hot. So, for the time being I’ve dropped Terminal and haven’t missed it once so far.

Go check it for yourself! It won’t be like last time.

Conditional Hash Initialization Style

We all run into situations where we want to initialize a hash, conditionally set some values, and then return it. I’ve often struggled to find a style that I’m fully satisfied with.

To their credit there are a few sites out there who have already figured this out.

But, like myself, there are a lot of users who prefer to use the keyboard as much as possible and find reaching for the mouse annoying.

UI people, please consider the following as a standard for keyboard navigation:

j - Next Item
k - Previous Item
- Goto Item
l - Next Page
h - Previous Page
/ - Focus on search field
? - Keyboard Shortcuts Help

Tools like jquery-hotkeys make it especially easy to pull this off. Extend as necessary.

A subset of your users will love you for it! :)

PS: You may notice, that this site is guilty of not doing this, but rest assured it will be in the very first release of any custom design I do for it.

Tip: Ignoring Aliases In Bash

Let’s say you have the following alias:

ls='ls -laFh'

And, you want to just call ‘ls’ by itself…

Just lead the command with a ‘\’ to bypass the alias.

\ls

That will give you the naked ‘ls’ command.
